Are you using AI for therapy?

Well, why wouldn’t you? AI tools appear to offer quick solutions in the moment, they’re available 24/7, they can even appear to offer empathy. It’s easier, more immediate and a lot cheaper than therapy, and we all like quick fixes, don’t we?

So why go to a therapist at all?

AI, by its own admission (just ask it) cannot replace a trained human therapist. Therapy is not about giving the “right” responses. Just as well really, as therapists do get it wrong, because we’re human. It is about the therapeutic relationship. Decades of research consistently show that the quality of the relationship between client and therapist is one of the strongest predictors of change.

A good therapist is not simply responding to your words. They are attuning to your tone, your pace, the silence, emotional shifts, and what is not being said. They are holding you in mind between and across sessions. They are affected by you, and that matters.

AI, by contrast, generates responses based on patterns in language. It does not feel, relate, or form a genuine connection. As much as you may feel understood, AI’s “empathy” is simulated. It doesn’t feel anything or actually understand what is going on for you in the moment. It just doesn’t have that capacity.

No real attunement or embodiment

Human therapists bring something fundamentally embodied into the room. They notice subtle cues such as posture, facial expression, and nervous system responses, anything that’s different about you on the day. In trauma-informed work, this is crucial.

For example, approaches like EMDR rely on careful tracking of a client’s internal state to ensure safety and regulation. This kind of moment-to-moment attunement cannot be replicated by a text-based system.

AI cannot detect when you are becoming overwhelmed, dissociated, or distressed. It cannot slow things down or intervene in real time in a meaningful, embodied way. Such features may become available in the future, but we’re not there yet.

Lack of accountability and ethical responsibility

Importantly, therapists operate within professional ethical frameworks. In the UK, many follow guidelines from organisations such as the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society or the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

These include responsibilities around:

  • Safeguarding
  • Confidentiality
  • Boundaries
  • Competence
  • Ongoing supervision

AI does not hold ethical responsibility in this way. There is no duty of care, no supervision, and no real accountability if something goes wrong.

No personalised clinical judgement

A trained therapist draws on theory, experience, and clinical judgement to tailor their approach to you as an individual. They are constantly assessing what is helpful, what is harmful, and what is needed next.

They can recognise complexity. For example:

  • When anxiety masks grief
  • When motivation difficulties relate to trauma or neurodivergence
  • When a client is not ready for a particular intervention

AI can offer general guidance, but it cannot truly assess risk, nuance, or readiness. It does not understand you in a clinical sense. It simply predicts text.

Risk of over-reliance and avoidance

AI can feel safe because it is always available, non-judgemental, and easy to engage with. For some people, this can become a way of avoiding more challenging but necessary human contact.

Therapy often involves discomfort. It may include rupture and repair, hearing difficult feedback, or confronting painful material within a supportive relationship. These are not bugs in the process. They are part of the work, which enables deeper emotional processing, expand self-awareness, and build the psychological flexibility and relational resilience needed for lasting change.

AI simply cannot participate in this kind of relational depth. If used as a substitute for therapy, over time, it may actually reinforce avoidance, thereby narrowing your world and increasing anxiety; for example, you might start turning down opportunities or withdrawing from relationships or not making any changes because it feels too risky.

Where AI can be helpful

This does not mean AI has no place. It can be a useful adjunct to therapy, when it is guided in a way that avoids simply providing reassurance and instead supports meaningful reflection and action. For example, you can prompt it to gently challenge avoidance, highlight possible blind spots, explore underlying emotions, and identify small, concrete steps forward rather than staying at the level of insight alone.

It can also be useful for preparing for therapy or difficult conversations by helping to organise thoughts and rehearse what to say. Used in this way, AI becomes less of a comfort tool and more of a structured aid for reflection and movement, while still remaining a supplement to, rather than a replacement for, therapy.

Some therapists are even exploring how AI tools can support clients between sessions, with clear boundaries in place.

A balanced view

It is completely understandable that people turn to accessible tools when they are struggling. Cost, availability, and stigma are real barriers to therapy. But good therapy is not just about providing information or engaging in a conversation over coffee. It is an ethically grounded, relational process designed to support meaningful and authentic change over time. AI can simulate aspects of that process, but it cannot replace the human elements that make therapy effective.
