Professor Edward Bullmore, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge, proposes a new way of thinking about depression. Professor Bullmore believes that depression could be the result of inflammation in the body, and that if that is the case, we need to be looking at other treatments which reduce inflammation, such as vagus nerve stimulation. Bullmore believes we need to move on “from seeing depression as all in the mind or all in the brain, to a response of the whole human self to the challenges of survival in a hostile world”.
